1879: Georgia’s First Official State Flag
Georgia adopted its first official state flag in 1879. Before this point, the state did not have a single standardized flag for government or ceremonial use.
The 1879 design was simple. It featured three horizontal stripes — red, white, and red — closely resembling the “Stars and Bars,” the first national flag of the Confederacy.
At the time, this design was intended to reflect regional memory and post–Civil War identity, rather than to serve as a detailed historical record.
1906: Adding State Identity
In 1906, Georgia modified its state flag to make it more clearly identifiable. The most important change was the addition of the state seal.
The updated flag placed Georgia’s coat of arms in a blue canton. This addition emphasized state authority, law, and governance.
This version helped distinguish Georgia’s flag from similar historical banners and marked a move toward a more official state symbol.
2003: Adoption of the Current Flag
In 2003, Georgia adopted its current state flag. This redesign followed years of public debate over earlier versions of the flag.
The current design returns to the basic red, white, and red stripes, but adds a blue canton with the state coat of arms and thirteen stars.
This version was later approved by voters, giving it broad public support and establishing it as Georgia’s modern official flag.
